Decades Past 1950s Stars

the 1950 gave us the best decade of style and icons that are still adored today. Here are a few of my favourites.

Bettie Page

 22nd April 1923 – 11th December 2008

Known as a “Bondage and Pin Up Queen” Page has been one of the greatest inspirations for many. Not only hopeful pin ups, nostalgia buffs but also in many subculture communities.

Her life was not without scandal , as you can imagine being Bettie Pagea fetish icon in the 50s, it was a very different and definitely a more  conservative time then.

She left the industry in the late 1950s and went into seclusion, living her later years out of the spotlight claiming she hated seeing her idols grow old and that her fans would rather remember her from‘glory’ days, so to say.

Page was nick named the girl with the perfect figure,  a girl that was both naughty and nice. From her raven hair ,s hort bangs and distinctive style she still inspires fashion and media today making her a true Icon.

"[Jerry Tibbs was] the one who got me wearing bangs. For years I had my hair parted down the middle in a ponytail, tucked down around the sides. But he said to me, 'Bettie, you've got a very high forehead. I think you'd look good if you cut some bangs to cover it.' Well, I went and cut the bangs, and I've been wearing them ever since. They say it's my trademark."

Marilyn Monroe

1st June 1926 – 5th August 1962

“Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.”

Norma Jean transformed into Marilyn Monroe (1946) by dying her brunette hair platinum blonde.  She was the first to grace the commvers of Playboy magazine in 1953 and and is still seen as one of the sexiest actresses of all time.

Even after her untimely death she is loved and adored and well known for her figure, blonde hair and ‘breathless’ voice.

She will forever be an Icon and a sex symbol.

“What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course.”

Audrey Hepburn

4th May 1929 – 20th January 1993

Audrey-Hepburn-Photograph-C10101762

“My look is attainable. Women can look like Audrey Hepburn by flipping out their hair, buying the large sunglasses, and the little sleeveless dresses.”

Originally dreaming of becoming a ballerina, her tall stature and lack of constant training throughout the war ultimately ended her career as a dancer.

Starred in many favourites such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady and Funny Face just to name a few.

Having worked with Givenchy on several occasions, Hepburn was known not only for her style and grace  but also her humanitarian achievements as a UNICEFF ambassador.

Wedding Tips

As i had just done a tutorial on makeup for a wedding I thought I should include some tips to make your makeup last longer and some things that may prevent stress from something unexpectedly going wrong!

  • Always do a trail run with your makeup and hair before the day so you can work out exactly what you want. Look online(Google images) and magazines for pictures. Don’t be afraid of telling the makeup artist what you are after but take notice and ask for their feedback because not everything suits everyone!
  • Try and refrain from doing anything drastic with your hair before your wedding unless you are exactly sure what you want and if it will suit you. Yes hair grows back but not in time for the wedding.
  • If you are uncomfortable wearing a lot of makeup don’t think that you should just grin and bare it for the day. Find what’s comfortable for you.
  • A wedding day is usually rather long and you want to make sure you are going to look flawless all day! Make sure the products being used are long wearing.
  • A bright or bold lip can look fabulous but to be honest its a lot of up keep. If you aren’t up for reapplying every so often you may want to go for a more neutral lip so you can just keep adding gloss.
  • Don’t wax on the day of  make sure you do ita few days before to make sure the area settles down. Also freshly waxed eye area doesn’t hold makeup well.
  • If you are getting a spray tan also don’t do that the day of either in case god forbid it goes wrong! Also remember you should wax a day before tanning.
  • If you are planning on doing your own makeup plan it all out in advance and practice, practise, practise! Don’t do something overly complicated if your not comfortable either! Take pictures of your trial runs, it will help you to stay focused on the day.
  • If you want fuller lashes but don’t want the hassle of applying false lashes but still want the look  why don’t you try tinting your lashes and get eyelash extensions! This is also great if you are having second thoughts with mascara as  you’ll shed a tear or two.
  • Your shoes you are planning to wear, they may look fabulous but remember that feeling when you wear new shoes out for the first time, wear them around your house for a week before to break them in a bit.
  • Things to have on you or a handy bridesmaid are : Bandaids, painkillers, safety pins, bobby pins, breath mints or spray (not chewing gum) , a small perfume, roll on deodorant, Lip gloss or lip stick, a sponge with a little of your foundation on it for touch-ups.
  • You can buy small gel inserts for your heels and things for the sling back to, every bit helps you want to be comfortable as possible anyway!
  • I know its hard but make sure you get enough sleep the night before and refrain from drinking too much, don’t drink too much whilst your getting ready either that’s what the reception is for.
  • As I said its a long day so make sure you have something to eat before you get ready or whilst your getting ready.
  • The time of your wedding is also something to consider, if your wedding is in the morning you will have to get up VERY early to get your hair and makeup done and get dressed! Like 3 am early, earlier if you have a large wedding party, if your not keen on an early start maybe go for an afternoon wedding.
  • Another thing that I think is overlooked try and stay as close to where the wedding is being held as possible, trust me this helps so much the day of!
  • Smile its your wedding day one of the most important days of your life so make sure you have fun!!!!!

Ok that is it for now. I know a lot of this is things you hear all the time but they are definitely worth thinking about!

Costume Ideas

A long floaty boho styled skirt would be perfect for this!

I would suggest jewel or earth toned clothing.

Just add a slip over it, a long scarf folded(on the diagonal) around your hips and add another to your head.

Wear lots of bangles, hoops or beaded earrings and your set!

I would suggest having your hair in messy beachy waves and maybe braided at the front?

Decades Past - 1940s

Betty Grable - “The Girl With the Million Dollar Legs”

18th December 1916 – 2nd July 1973

betty-grable

“There are two reasons why I am successful in show business and I am standing on both of them.”

Famously known for her legs, Fox insured them in the 40’s for a quarter of a million dollars!

She was pushed into becoming a star from her mother who made her take dancing lessons at a young age.

Rita Hayworth - “The Love Goddess”

17th October 1918 – 14th May 1987

Rita_Hayworth_Gilda(1946)_02B-744570

Known for her beautiful red locks, Hayworth was naturally black haired.

Hayworth actually became the first movie star to marry a prince (Aly Khan, 27th May 1949) not Grace Kelly like many think.

Gilda came out in 1946 ,  playing the bombshell the publics perception of her was of that but she was actually very reserved in real life.

“I never really thought of myself as a sex goddess, I felt I was more of a comedian that can dance”

Vivien Leigh – The Beauty

5th November 1913 – 7th July 1967

vivien

Probably most known for playing Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind in 1939.

Leigh  had an almost mischievous, cat like smile and her eyebrow raised. In her career she only appeared in 20 films .

She was also somewhat obsessed with the appearance of her hands, thinking that they were too large, used gloves to hide them and accumulated about 150 pairs.

“Scorpios burn themselves out and eat themselves up and they are careless about themselves - like me. I swing between happiness and misery and I cry easily. I am a mixture of my mother's determination and my father's optimism. I am part prude and part non-conformist and I say what I think and don't dissemble. I am a mixture of French, Irish and Yorkshire, and perhaps that's what it all is.”

Lana Turner – Femme Fatale

8th February 1921 – 25th June 1995

Lana-Turner-Postman_l

Several marriages, affairs and alcoholism all unfortunately took the lime light whilst her brilliant career and acting took the back seat to the public. Even though starring in around 60 films.

"I liked the boys and the boys liked me."

"I planned on having one husband and seven children, but it turned out the other way around."
